Getting Started with Cyber Security

With the world getting modernized, there are more and more people using the internet for all kinds of tasks. Digitalization opened up a myriad of opportunities for both corporations and individuals. With the increase in convenience and usage, however, also came a higher risk to all kinds of sensitive and confidential data. So how are corporations and individuals protecting themselves against these security vulnerabilities? The answer would be Cyber Security!

Before we get into what Cyber Security is, let's look at the quagmire Sam has gotten herself in. Generally, Sam is a person who frequently makes transactions on the web and hence has her credit card, email ID, address, etc. on multiple websites. From one of these websites, she received an email to confirm her identity to avail a discount coupon. She wasn't suspicious of this as she thought it was just to verify her account details. She was shocked when she received messages of a large sum of money being debited from her account. As it turns out, the email was just a scam to get her to enter her personal information and she was hacked. The person carrying out such kinds of cyber attacks is commonly referred to as a hacker.

Now, we wouldn't want what happened to Sam happening to any of us, so how do we prevent attacks like these from taking place? To begin with, let's learn a little more about Cyber Security and keeping ourselves safe.

Cyber Security is the body of technologies, processes, and techniques designed to help secure specific networks, data, computer systems, etc. from unauthorized access. The goal is to reduce the risk of cyber attacks (like the one in the example before) and protect corporations and individuals from any harm caused by the misuse of data gained by unauthorized access.

Now that we know what cyber security is, it's time to learn more about the different practices we can inculcate to make our internet experiences more pleasant and secure. Ensuring that all the software stays updated is a good place to start when thinking of keeping your confidential data secure. Avoid opening any emails which seem suspicious or have unknown senders. Always double-check before clicking on any links. Use anti-virus software and regularly check for any threats detected. Back up all data and avoid using public networks as the data exchanged may be vulnerable to other users.

That sums up the introduction to cyber security but there is a lot more to explore on cyber security as a career and what exactly the different kinds of cyberattacks entail. Perhaps some other day at LetsUpgrade.
